The Xindi are the former multi-species inhabitants of the planet Xindus in what is known as the Delphic Expanse. There were once six different sentient species cohabitating on Xindus: the Xindi Primates, Arboreals, Aquatics, Reptilians, Insectoids, and Avians. But a century-long civil war wiped out the Avian race and destroyed the planet. In the early 22nd century, the remaining Xindi races allied together with the enigmatic trans-dimensional Guardians who had built the mysterious cloaked spheres that caused the spatial anomalies that defined the Delphic Expanse. The Guardians instructed and guided the Xindi to build a super weapon capable of destroying a planet to further their own secret goal of invading the galaxy.

By the 26th century, the Guardians could monitor many possible timelines at once and communicate backwards in time with the 22nd century Xindi, whom they manipulated into believing that humans would cause the destruction of the Xindi's new homeworld in the future.

In April of 2153 they targeted Earth with a single-pilot prototype of the larger weapon that cut a straight line of devastation wide enough to be seen from orbit, stretching from Florida, through Cuba, to Venezuela, and killing 7 million people. After the attack on Earth, Starfleet's first Warp 5 capable vessel, the Enterprise, commanded by Captain Jonathan Archer, was tasked with entering the uncharted Delphic Expanse and stopping the Xindi from completing the weapon.
